The stakes are always high when Alabama and Auburn tee it up. The 1981 Iron Bowl had the usual drama and more as Crimson Tide Coach Paul “Bear” Bryant pursued his record-setting 315th coaching win.

With the game on the line, Walter Lewis—Alabama’s then-sophomore quarterback, connected with Jesse Bendross to put the Tide ahead for good. Running back Linnie Patrick crushed Auburn’s remaining hopes, putting Alabama—and the Bear—on top.
